new engine or rebuild

i have a '91 explorer eddie bauer edditino and it has a ticking noise that was diagnosed as piston slap. so im looking for anotehr engine to put in there. i dont want to spend 2k on this and am looking for a cheap rebuild kit that comes iwth new pistons/lifters/cam etc... or if anyone out there has a hook up for me on another engine that would be appreciated. thanks!

If your piston slap only occurs when the engine is cold, or is not very noticable I would not do a thing except experiment with some oil additives that may or may not help. Piston slap usually occurs when the engine is first started up in the morning. Some of the 5.4 litre Expeditions are famous for their piston slap, normally not a major reason for a rebuild, wait until something really breaks. How many miles on your Truck?

Anyway,you might still have piston slap after a "cheap" rebuild, or a new "used" motor.

it has 170,000 miles on it. it might be a lifter too cause the noise doens't go away no matter how long u run it . just quites down alittle after it warms up.
