removing pistons without pulling the engine?

I have a 5.4 99 expedition that has a broken piston. I discovered it after pulling the head. Can you remove the piston without pulling the engine? If so what about getting the new one in? any advice?

um....no....i think you're going to have to pull the engine...plus the broken piston probably damaged the cylinder or the valves....best to pull it and check everything out

Can you pull the pan with the motor in? Can you get it back on with the motor in? If so, you're in luck...sort of..
