'94 Explorer will not start after engine has reached operating temp.
I have a '94 Explorer Sport. My problem seems to be happening during warmer climate. The car start fine in the morning, but after turning off the engine and running my errands the engine will not start. To elaborate, the engine cranks, and i have idle speed for about 2 secons but then slowly the idle dies out and the engine stops. If I wait for a few minutes and keep tyring the engine cranks right up and it runs fine. The problem is very sporadic and it usually happens at the worset times. I took it to a repair shop and there was no codes showing, and of-course it did not act up for them. It almost seems like vapor lock.I can smell some raw gas from the exhaust when I try to restart the car. If any one has any suggestions please write me. I have read all the other letters but none seem to be like my problem.

Sound like you have fuel it you can smell it out of the exhaust. The fuel injection is triggered from the cam sensor in what used to be the dist. I'd check ignition for spark when it won't start, pull a spark plug wire off and stick an old plug in the loose wire and ground the plug. Crank the engine over to test for spark. As I recall the crank angle sensor in the front cover passenger side lower, controls the ignition.

my explorer would shut down while driving it was like I ran
out of gas because the engine would turn but not start and
then after a few the car started. It was the EEC power relay
I swichted with another relay the A/C and the problem went away
so I replaced it then my ABS light would come on and my AC would
go out so I replaced all the power relays and it run fine.
cost me about $5.00 a relay from ford. after about seven years
the relays all started to go.

First I like to thank this message board patrons. I read all the aritcles and it is very informative.
My problem was my Fuel pump relay that had gone bad. I replaced it with the A/C Relay and the car runs fine now. But I will take your advise and to be on the safe side replace all my relays. It is such a inexpensive preventive that is worth doing it.
Again thank you to everyone and all of you saved me alot of money to have it diagnosed.

You described my problem to a "t". It turned out ot be the ignition control module. The 1994 Ford 4.0L V-6 has a distributorless ignition. The module sits on top of the engine and is one of the few things on the truck you can get to with unbelievable ease. It is the module where all the spark plug wires come together, just like a square distributor cap. It cost me $154 to buy a new one and 15 minutes to put it on.
Put a piece of tape on each spark plug wire so you know in what order to put them back on. Remove them. take the 4 screws out holding the module on. Unplug it. Replace it and reattach the plug and wires. I've never had the problem again.

In addition to the above message:
The problem is that when an old ignition control module gets hot, it shorts. When you try and start it, its only firing a few plugs. It "resets" once it cools off and the truck will start again.

I read recently, that there is a Class Action lawsuit in California against Ford for a design flaw in the ignition module on several models. It can overheat and crack the circuit board causing intermitent operation and stalling. Apparent Ford has relocated the unit in new models.

I had the exact problem. I tracked it down to the fuel pump relay was sticking when hot. If you want to test it before replacing it just tap on it the next time the truck is idling rough. The part is only $1.50 at Pepboys.
Good luck
