I just picked up a 97 XLT with the 5.0 V8. How can I tell if it came with a "Tow Package"? It has a Class III equalized hitch with a 7000 lb. capacity listed on it, but I don't know if the truck is really equipped to handle it. Also, does anyone know what the capacity is for the 5.0 if it does have the package installed?
The tow package in '97 added a lower ratio, limited slip axle, auxillary transmission cooler, heavy duty flasher relays and a 4-pin wire harness. You can look through your grill and if you see a small radiator looking item in front of your radiator on the passenger side, then you have the auxillary cooler. Check the 2-digit code under "axle" on the sticker on the edge of your driver's door and post it here. Someone can look it up for you. If the first part is a D then you have a limited slip which was only available with the tow package in '97. A D2 is an LS 4.10, a D4 is an LS 3.73. Look in your Owner's Manual, and using the axle ratio that you have it will tell you the tow rating. If you don't have an Owner's Manual then go to www.ownerconnection.com and register your VIN. You can then download an Owner's Manual for your Explorer. You can also order an official copy from Helm. I think they are at www.helm-inc.com?

Thanks, that's just the info I was looking for.
I just checked and it has the D4 (3.73) LSD and I can see the aux cooler, so it must have the package. The manual says 6,800 lbs with a GVCW of 11,000 lbs. Not as much as my expedition, but close, and definitely more than I need.
BTW, the O/M shows the 3.73 as the only diff with the AWD V8 4DR
What is this Helm. you said you could order? Is that the manufacturor's listing of what options a specific vehicle rolled off the assemble line with. (a dealer window sticker) -- do you know if anything like this is available?
No Helm is the official literature company that Ford uses for their manuals. You can buy the complete set of manuals (Owner's Guide, Warranty Information Booklet, Service Guide, Audio Guide, 4x4 Supplement, etc) for about $37, complete with new vinal binder. Mine was stolen, so when I called Ford about getting a relacement, that is where they referred me to. My replacment looked just like my original. As far as a replacement window sticker, your Ford dealer can print out a replacement. It won't look exactly like the original, however it will have the list of options and the prices. My '95 T-bird that I bought used from a Ford dealer had one on the window.
