When i put my Bronco in reverse it sounds like it is going to drop the driveshaft or something, serious clunk when first engaged but fine afterwards. I had a shop tell me it is normal for Broncos because of the short drivetrain.
Just wondering " Fact or Fiction" Any oppinions out there are much appreciated. Thanks
I have a 1990 bronco with an e40d. Same thing. New u-joints and yokes. Still the same problem. Gotta be the e40d. I have parted it out for my 88. I am not even going to dump my money into the e40d. My 88 has the AOD and it has never had a all the prblems the e40d does.
The transfer case could be it also. they are chain type/drive not gears, therefore the chain strechtes and you have slack in the chain. when you change direction fwd an reverse the clunk you here is the slack in the chain. hope it helps just something else to consider.
Guys, guys, take a look around this forum and you will find that the most likely culprit is the slip yoke on the rear driveshaft. Remove the boot, if it still has one, and lube the heck out of it. I'd be willing to put money on hearing less from the driveline after doing so. If for some reason you do still get noise, the double cardon joints (front of the rear DS) are known to lose tension at the centering device but not show much if any signs of deterioration in the U-joints associated with it.
One prob I had with mine was the T-Case was naking the noise. Too much slack inside of it. I had the same clunk going into reverse as well as a hard shift into OD when i left off the gas just as it shifted. Had it rebuilt for about $350 and all was better. You can tell by leaving the vehicle in neutral and rotate the drive shaft back and forth. You will prolly see and maybe even hear where the clunk is coming from.
i have a 94 5.0 also and it will clunk into reverse only if parked on a incline? sometimes it will take a 3 seconds for the reverse to engage if on level ground??
Transmission shop told me it is the "Nature of the Beast"...in the morning put it into drive for about thirty seconds while holding down the break and then shift into reverse. I was told this get's everything primed and ready. Works for me...no clunk.
Mine has a horrible clunk too. I was told it was my t-case. It will do it in overdrive. It will clunk way hard if I hit the gas and let off real fast. I am going to try to crack it open and do the chain myself.
