I bought the Mossburg defender 12g, for 199.99. Got it just for beating up/blowing things up. clunky? yup. fit and finish below average? yup.
poorly balanced? yup. fun to shoot? yup!
I use my Remington 12G semi-auto for "real" usage, duck/pheasant, skeet and the like. The Moss is just a basher gun.. but still fun
I really liked the feel of the 870 (granted I did not get to shoot it) but it slid very well, the mossberg I used last season (loaner from a guy I worked with) was terrible, it would hang up all the time when trying to pump it (even with all the proper cleaning/oiling) and it was very clunky and loose. It also had a 28 inch barrel which felt too long for me.
The 870 had a tight, almost compact feel to it. I think I got a good deal on it too, since I was looking on the internet and didn't see any for less than $450.
Sounds like you got one heck of a buy. The Remingon 870 has got to be the most reliable, dependable, and most versatile shotgun ever made. You can get about anything to go on it and you can find replacement parts anywhere (though you'll probably never need them. Congratulations.
i agree i cant count how many times i have dropped my 870 in the mud and just dipped it in the water to wash it out before i kept on shootin with it
i have used all different loads from buckshot to clay loads, its not a heavy gun and its not complicated i have disassembled mine many times (in dark, cold, wet places) but i kinda mistreat it
only thing that could be better is auto's are faster the speed is a killer (so hit two ducks with the first two shots because a third shot will be a LONG one)
