Porting on the barrel not only helps with the recoil but it helps control the muzzel rise at firing. if it's an option I would not concider ordering with out it...Any good gun store will be happy to order the gun you want and have you pick it up from them when it arrives for a small fee for there services and paperwork... good luck with that cannon!
I'm thinking I might go with a shorter barrel, it would be easier to swing around when ducks hunting, and easier to carry and whatnot. I assume there are some drawbacks to having a short barrel, but I'll be damned if I know what they are...
I'm not thinking anything TOO short, maybe 22 or 24 inch..
Sight radius is lost when the distance between the rear sight and the front sight bead is shortened, due to a shorter barrel, affecting accuracy, a function of sight radius length. The choke of the barrel determines shot pattern,(spread) not barrel length, within reason.
The two that I have owned are ok, i.e they shoot and the actions function reliably and the camo model with the 3.5" chamber allows me to leave the Beretta home if the weather is bad, I don't mind getting the Mossberg wet.
I went to the hunting shop down the street to see if they would order the gun for me, and what I needed to do for it, and THEY HAD IT IN STOCK. I was shocked, and thrilled of course. I got the 870 Exress Supermag chambered for 3.5" shells, black synthetic stock, and 26" barrel. It was only $349.99! I had to go find an ATM to put it on layaway, and half an hour later I was set. In no more than 30 days I will have my gun, .only $315 to go!
I've shot the 870 Magnum Express, Mossberg 835 UltiMag, and now the Benelli Nova. The 870 was a great gun, and I consider Remington to be the best bang for your buck. The 835 was very disappointing. It felt very loose, and the safety on the Mossberg's stinks. I had the ball bearing that the safety rest on come out while in the marsh hunting ducks. Nothing worse than not having confidence in the safety operation of a gun.
The Benelli that I currently shoot is the best pump shotgun that I have ever used. It costs a little more than Remington, but worth it to me. The feel of the gun, and the ability to eject the shells from the magazine tube without having to feed them in to the receiver is great.
