91 explorer, head gasket typical cost ?
Can anyone tell me what would be the typical cost of replacing a blown head gasket on a 91 explorer ? i'm not sure if its really blown, seler says its not but when i saw it running it hasd some white smoke comming out, he said the truck had not been started in a week and i did not run for more that 1 minute.. could it just be humidity ?
oil seemed clean and could not really smell anything in the exhaust, should I ?
thanks
The first place the 4.0L leaks is at the intake manifold to cylinder head gasket. Then if you don't watch the temp guage, you can cook the engine and crack the cylinder heads. The machine shop (Cylinder Head Exchange, Sylmar, CA)that I use said that most explorer heads that come in are cracked from overheating.
The head gasket set, new set of head bolts and misc parts I'd guess retail $300.00.
Oil & filter, thermostat & coolant $60.00
Radiator serviced $50.00
Cylinder head resurface and valve grind I'd guess (2) $250.00
Cylinder head core charge $300.00?
Labor 8 hours @ $70.00 = $560.00
$1500. and you don't know if the rings are wasted from overheating.
Pay a shop to check the engine out it could be the best $50.00 you ever spent.
