i had a leaky valve on my 1997 6-SOHC Explorer and have a question on it's function... I noticed that there seems to only be vaccum (actuated) when the car is just turned-off.... otherwise it's happily in the rest-position and circulating the hot coolant into the firewall.... No matter what the temp **** setting is on the controls inside the valve seems to stay put.... I thought that this must be wrong and be the reason why when i place the temp **** on coldest it's always 'warm' and not ambient... although placing the know on hottest makes you melt!
Any clues for a newbie?
Thanks.
Sam
P.S. i did replace the valve and the although there is no leak anymore, the valve is still behaving the same way...
I think coolant is shut off to the heater core when the AC is set to "MAX".
Steve
That is my understanding of it as well. When you have the settings on anything other than "AC MAX" the coolant flows through the heater core and temperature setting is done via the blend door (which likes to break). If you put it on "AC MAX" coolant flow is not run through the core and the air pickup is also changed to be from inside the cabin.
I am pretty sure that this is how it works as this is how I get my AC to blow cold (blend door is busted beyond repair and is taped in a warm position). When I need warm I use all other settings. If need cold then AC max it is.
Thanks for your replies.... i verified that the valve is only actuated when the AC is set to "Max" and stays in the rest position otherwise.... I also noticed that the air coming out of the vents (No AC, set to coolest) is always 'warm' and not close to the outside temp.... Is this normal? (explainable by the fact that coolant is almost always circulating in the heater core except when Max AC is on) or should i possibly be looking at the condition of the mixture door?
Thanks again, at least i know the valve is working as designed! (although i would prefer, and will likely, clip it in the activated position for the summer months here in SoCal)
