I don't have an owners manual, so I was wondering what the tow rating is for a '73 F250, 4x2, reg cab, long bed with a C6, 360 CID and 3.80 gears. Any help appreciated.
I'm not sure but I don't think that back then they had tow rating as we have now. Ford had more GVW ratings than you could shake a stick at, and every one had different parts. It took me 3 trys to get a drag link for a 79 F250 all 2x4 and different GVW. 73 is a older body but it had the same problems to many parts not enough time.
The truck was, basically, rated by Ford to tow between 3,800 and 4,000 pounds. The 360 was listed by Ford then as the BASE tow engine. However, of course, that was for a relatively heavy load.
The 360 was a torque motor by and large. It was really good for moving large and heavy loads. The C6 was, quite honestly, the second toughest automatic transmission built in the US for years and years. (If it will help you out, you can still buy a lower first gear set from many companies.) Too, do be absolutely certain to use an auxillary transmission cooler if you are going to trailer with the C6. It used Type F automatic transmission fluid which, undenaibly, was the best ATF ever used.
If the engine is in good shape, I should think you will do fine with it.
Matt, your truck will tow just about anything that you can hook to it. My 66 half ton with same basic drivetrian as yours pulls my 18ft car hauler with lwb 4X4s about the same as my 5X8 utility trailer.
