I purchased a used 2006 Expedition with the a 5.4. The owners manual says the tow rating is 6,000# for standard towing package and 8,950# for the optional tow package. I have no idea which one mine has. How can I find out? What equipment does the vehicle rated at 8,950# have that the vehicle rated at 6,000# doesn't? Thanks.
If you go to your local Ford dealer's parts department with the VIN they can give you a print out of the build sheet. That will have all the specs the truck was built with. It is usually a free service.
Accordind to the sticker on the door jam the axle code is "15". The salesman said that since it is an EB model the tow capacity should be the 8,950# rating. The axle is a 3.31 ratio. That seems a bit high for a 8,950 rating to me. Any other help would be appreciated.
oh and are you sure you are not mistaking an optional tow package for a "weight distributing hitch" that is what i would assume is going on. 6000 with a standard hitch and 89 with the weight dist. has nothing to do with the car side, its an add on that goes on a trailer. google it. also look at the sticker on your car hitch, i bet it confirms this.

I think you are correct sir. On my 2000 it clearly states this right on the hitch itself.

Very good tip. I checked the receiver this morning and there it was. Thanks.
