As you can see by my pictures posted in a link above, I've been through this. I found another complete truck that was rust free and proceeded to combine the 2 trucks. This was expensive, but it's easier to move an entire truck and it had some other pasrt I wanted (A/C). I'm sure it's different in each state. I'm in Texas, I tried to do mine the legal way. Once the body swap was complete, I had to start at the local county Tax assesor where I usually get my registration. They gave me the forms I needed. I had to have a somebody from the Sherrif's office inspect my truck, and verify that it had the parts I said it has and that nothing was stolen. Then I took that paperwork to the Texas DOT office here in Austin. They gave me a reassigned VIN paper and a metal stamped sticker for my door jam that is stamped with the VIN of my frame. That is what the truck is titled. Now, I probably could have just got it inspected and never done anything else. But, if there was ever an accident or crime that required the authorities to look at my truck they could have impounded it for falsified Title information.

Again, it's likely to be different in every state. I'd start with your local vehicle tax/regsitration folks.

I'm finally completely legal! It's been a long, difficult path. But, my truck is starting to look and perform as I had originally hoped. It recently hauled a Ton of dirt in the bed and on my last track trip I got a 14.5 second 1/4 mile time with a lot of room for improvement (I think it will go 13s)! So, I'm getting close to my goal of a fast old truck that can still work.

Before you give up on this cab, try fixing it first. Whats the worst you could do to it, its already rusted. Thats the way I've been thinking as I've been fixing rust on my 82 F100. Get some 18 or 20 gauge sheetmetal and make a new piece for the roof. Check out my floor and cab corners in my gallery, they where really rusted. I made sure I cut ALL the rust out and welded in new sheetmetal. Do you have a welder and any other tools to fix it?

I have fixed rust just like this. It's hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like a good sandblasting would be a good place to start. That will determine just how much good metal you have, and how much needs to be cut off. That's what I did. After I had removed the rust and very thin metal I used fiberglass around that roof seam. Used bondo in small amounts and it turned out perfect. The only expensive part is the sandblasting. The rest is just patience. Good luck.
