When I put the shift lever in OD, it will not shift out of third.
I tried to shift manually. When I put lever into drive (3rd), it stays in 2nd gear. When I move the lever into to OD (4th), it shifts into third but will not go into ID.
It WILL shift into OD if I do the following: At 50-60MPH I put the lever into neutral and race the engine. After the RPMs go down, I put the lever back into OD. It will then cycle into OD.
Try the simple things first like fluid level and shift linkage adjustment. After that, you'll need to get your hands on the ATSG manual or factory service manual to help troubleshoot the problem you're having. If you have any engine codes, fix them first. Believe it or not, some engine sensors are used by the transmission, like throttle position sensor and temperature.
Thanks for the reply. The fluid is okay and there are no engine codes. I not sure about the linkage adjustment. Please tell me how to check the linkage adjustment.
Rather than try to explain it, I think your best bet would be to get your hands on a manual. It would have all the pictures and detail that are difficult to include here. If you don't want to buy one, try your local library. Libraries in the Seattle area have the Ford factory manuals in addition to the Haynes and Chiltons manuals.
I had a similar problem with my 92 explorer 4x4 about 1.5 years ago. The check engine light came on though. I ran the codes and the throttle position sensor TPS was out of range, i tested it and there were a couple of dead spots in it, therefore telling the computer there was no throttle of full throttle. When i hit this dead spot the tranny would all of a sudden downshift for no reason. I changed the TPS with a new one and the problem was eliminated.
