i just about made it home from 4 wheeling today,i made it to the main road from the trail, and i noticed i was leaking trans fluid from the front end nearing the engine,i checked the dipstick and it was just about showing up at the very end of the stickk. i called up my buddy and he drove me to autozone and we got some trans fluid, filled it,and the leaking stopped from a steady leak to more of a drip drip drip. and by the time i got home,it wasnt leaking at all and the fluid was still full, anybody have any idea on whats going on? plllleaaaase help. thanks alot in advance
If you have an A4LD, it's most likely the infamous front seal leak. Very common for those suckers to do that. Yes, it does diminish some time. The only problem is, once it leaks, it will always leak. It will dribble at times and then gush until you change it.
You also might have a torque converter problem. The welds on these sometimes break and leak.
Also, hopefully it is not, it could also be from internal slipping. The slipping will produce enough heat to overheat the ATF enough to blow the front seal.
when you are wheelin the fluid is not getting properly cooled this excess heat swells the torque converter and the front seal will leak. when you added the trans fluid it was cool and the cooler fluid made the converter shrink back up and the leak stops. if you do this enough the front seal will destroy itselfand you will have to replace it.you may want to install an after market cooler , this may keep it just cool enough so it doesnt swell enough to leak.

This is exactlt why the tsb requires you to drill the drainback hole and enlarge the area to allow the oil to flow more easily. Not only will it destroy the front seal......It may also burn up the transmission if not caught soon enough. That is one big bill.
