i have been looking everywhere for a pic of the 2.0L used in the 88 ranger. the sticker on my truck says it came with the 2.0 but this thing has gobs more power than the mazda 2.0 i had in my old 79 courier. it looks just like the efi 2.3 in my bosses 97 ranger. is it and older 2.3 cuza it's carbed and the ppl who swapped it out didn't want to mess with the cpu addition?? please help me out. i'll post pic tomorrow then we can compare pics?? please!?!
ok i checked with the napa guy he said that the 2 mtrs take different plugs, the 2.0 takes the autolite 765. the 2.3 takes autolite 2545... so with that ammo i took out a plug and it was an autolite 2544....?????? hhhmmmm time to call him back.. I'm hopeing with all my heart that it's the 2.3 ...
that looks like my eng except for the efi and the fact that my oil fill is in back... did that make a 2.3 with the oil fill in back or can the valve cover be put on backwards??
The last year of a carbed 2.3 was 1984, it was rated at 79 HP@3800 & 124 ft-lbs @ 2200 compared with the 88 2.0's 80 HP @ 4200 & 106 ft-lbs @ 2600.
I'm sorry I don't know more about them, just trying to help you out however I can. They both have the same stroke of 3.13" so it's possible that they share the same engine block and look similar. One of the charts in the Haynes manual shows identical underhood service points for the carbed 2.0 and 2.3
I would bet that if it is noticeably more powerful that your old Courier, that it very well could be a 2.3 since it has more torque and gets its HP at lower RPM's than the 2.0. From what I have heard, the 2.0 is an absolute dog.
this thing gets up and scoots.. another q for ya i have an ISC (idle speed control) box on my rf inner fender p/n e87f-9l513-aa is this the puter for the truck?? i'm getting about 16mpg right now. is the 2.3 tempermental on mpg by how you drive it?? i have kind of a lead foot. (used to having to wind up the courier to get power)
i had a 88 ranger that had a 2.3 block with a 2.0 carberated head, i had a piston break in the 2.0 that was in it when i got it a freind had a 2.3 efi that he was swapping out to put a 302 in so i got the 2.3 dirt cheap so i checked with a few mechanics and said what should match up, so a few trips to auto parts with everything got proper gasket sets to work with and with a little work the 2.3 block had a 2.0 head with carb on it,,, it had plenty of power and ran just great the only real mod i had to make was the 2.0 had a mechanical fuel pump which was why the #1 piston broke any way,,, i had to install a universal fuel pump no problem with that. just a warning to anyone that has a mechanical fuel pump in the 2.0, 2.3 s when checking your oil smell it to see if it is strong gas smell your fuel pump maybe leaking back into motor spraying gas directly onto the #1 piston cylinder and it will scar the cylinder and bust the rings on it. you may not know the fuel pump is leaking at all until motor fails!! well just my 2 cents worth,,,,,
