I am building up a 351W using 400M conrods, and thought I would use a new crank, as the motor is expected to put out 450 - 500 Hp. But guess what...I can't find a Standard Spec Ford 351W 4340 Forged Steel crank!!
All the ones I can find on the net are for 351W strokers...which I don't want to use.
Any help in locating one...or..Where I can get one made would be appreciated.
Yes I have, I live in Australia, and via the Net & Phone I have checked with SCAT, EAGLE Lunati etc...they all make stroker cranks for the 351, mostly using Chev Rods ( 2.100 BE). But, non of them ( that I can find) make 4340 Forged Standard spec 351W with the Std stroke and Rod Journal size! Very Strange!!...The best I can find is SCAT 9000 Series CAST crank. I really don't want to use a cast crank...I can get SCAT to custom make a 4340 Forged ...but they want US$1550.00 !!!!! Thats alot in Aussie $$! So...I am try to find any smaller companies that may make them...for a reasonable price, at least...very frustrating. I have built this engine combination before and it is great, but I am building another want and am steppng everthing up. Thus the new crank..it is very frustrating. Any help would be appreciated.
I think the 9000 series cast will be plenty for what you want. Don't confuse that remarkable crank for a stock one. It is much, much, much harder and stronger than the stocker.
I'm very interested in this build...since I was sure the 400 snout was too short to "fit" the 351W block ?!
Thanks for your replies. The crank I want if for '74 351W Block. With 3.0" Mains. Thus a standard spec 351W crank ( 4340 Forged if possible). Sorry about not replyinging sooner, But went away to the snow for the weekend, and just got back.
Now, 'Racerguy',what is this about the using a 351C spec crank in the 351W with some kind of spacers????
Otherwise, I looks like I will have to go for the CAST Scat 9000 series.
Thanks all so far.
The thing I like most about this build is its ability to run well on lower(crap) octance fuels.
The second link in my post is for the bearing spacers.
They use Cleveland size main bearings as they are smaller and that slows down the bearing speed. According to the Ford Motorsport catalog " The smaller journals reduce friction and heat, which translates into more horsepower at the flywheel".
If you snoop around on www.fordracingparts.com you'll find some more info.
Thanks very much Racerguy, I had a look and they look very interesting.
I called a local place about them, and they advised they were hard to get, even from Ford Racing, but I will make some enquiries myself, in the next day or two.
Thanks for all your help.
