D2TEAA Head porting

Just thought I'd pass on a little info. I have started on the porting process of my set of D2's. As Tsaven Nava stated in his post I myself learned how much not to take out of my exhaust port.
I did learn the hard way that the exhaust hump can not be ground all the way down. There is a water jacket around the plugs. Trust me on this.
Here is the link to a picture of before and after of two exhaust ports one with the hump and one where part of it was ground down.D2T Heads
With the head laying flat and looking at a hump. Imagine a line drawn from the top outside corner to the bottom inside corner of the hump. That is what you want to take out. Not the whole hump.
The total height inside the port is approx. 1.710". If you could imagine grinding down the middle of the hump, you would only want to take out a maximun of about 1.50". In a nutshell you are simply grinding the corner of the hump down.
As many have said here before, the best way to find out how much to take out is to buy a bad head at a yard; take out your grinder and make a hole.
Just thought I'd pass on this info.
Good luck with yours,

Robert P.

Bad idea on removing that lump. Ford cast it there to leave more room around the spark plug. The lump is also in the bottom of the inside corner of the port, where there is the least amount of flow. There are usually lumps in the roof of the port, thats where you want your attention. DF, at his Dad's house

From: Destin/Ft. Walton Beach,
It must depend on the year head, because I have removed 90% of the "hump" in the exhaust ports with no ill effects. While smoothing the the "roof" of the port does indeed show gains on a flow bench, smoothing the short side (bottom) radius also shows improved flow. It creates a straighter path from the cylinder to the header/exhaust manifold, and reduces turbulence. The photo's that Robert provided, appear to show that the port has been made wider then stock, and the shape has been changed. With stock heads, the key is not to make the ports larger, but to make them flow better. When the outside of the exhaust port is made to be of a larger volume then that of the interior of the exhaust port, they flow worse then stock. I too have ruined heads in the attempt for more power.

I did notice the indinsion followed by a hump on the roof coming out of the valve. I just have gotten to that yet. I believe my heads have beenworked on to and extent. The header gaskets that came with my flow techs, are just a dog hairs width from macthing the gaskets. i quess that is why stevef100s noticed it to be wide. There are some valve guide that have been replaced, but they still have the 1.55 exhaust valve and the roof hump. So, I still have work to do.
Wife just came home gotta gooooooo........
