Ford "black death"
I removed the orifice tube on my Ranger and discovered that it is covered in a thick black sticky goo. I found a related article on another website, written in 1999, that it is caused from minute fragments of metal from the compressor mixing with refrigerant oil and collecting on the orifice tube. They referred to it as Ford's "black death". Requires replacing compressor, condensor, accumulator, orifice tube, etc.. Very expensive repair. Has anyone heard of this ??? Are their any updates on it ??

Thats what the orifice tube looked like on my '89 F150, I flushed the condenser, evaporator, REPLACED compressor, dryer, liguid line and suction/discharge hose and use a red orifice tube. Then i converted the system over to R134a and while driving on a 95deg+ day I will get vent temps of 30deg.
