On my new toy...w/ Cruise a matic trans...need the 5/8 or 1/2" line from the lower rad. hose tee to the cooler located on RH side of trans. My guesstimate is it would be about 6-7' long but the piece runs parrallel to engine on the left, crosses over to RH side at inspection plate area and goes to the cooler where its attached to cooler with hoses(same up front)
I dont understand the logic behind the cooler not having a water return....may be changing that a bit.....would a car be same as truck ???? My parts illustration book dont show this setup for any truck regardless of its size....suggestions ????
Don, I don't know what tee you are referring to. There is no water in the tranny either. The tank on the bottom or side of the rad. is seperated from the water. The Cruse-O-Matic tranny did not with a cooler.
IMHO, The proper way to install a cooler is to add it in line after the radiator. No tees anywhere.
the camper specials at least that year used water running back to the tranny instead of tranny fluid to a oil cooler on the radiator as we are more normally see at least this was the way it was on my fathers 65 f250 CS with HD crusieomatic but I have no idea as to hose size my original manual seems to leave that out
Yep,Same here,I have a '66 F100 CC that had the 352ci and Cruise-amatic trans, and it had the same set-up. I changed mine to a aftermarket trans cooler because I changed to a C6 behind my 557ci BB Ford. Keith
Was going to add my $.02 but looks like jowilker posted same answer. While looking for possible options on my 65 decided to install a radiator that would provide additional cooling for auto trans if decide to install later. Believe donor truck was a 66 w/ auto. Manual i acquired refers to the radiator as 'downflow' type where the lower tank of radiator harbors a separate cell for circulating transmission fluid. The radiator that has the inlet/outlet fittings. Usuallly see oil cooler installed in series with this type radiator. With radiator full, removing the inlet or outlet fitting has not effect on radiator coolant. Believe 5/8" line, but not sure. suggest using tube bender and make up new ones.
good luck,
dave

I have a master parts book set which doesnt show the exact setup either, but closest I could find in pix was a 6 cyl in a P series rig...
The tee goes inbetween the radiator lower hose(gotta section hose for the tee). If you look in the shop manual itself, it does show the tee inline w/lower rad hose and an offshoot for cooler line. The setup is unigue to A/T trucks of course.....since this is a Ranger, its gonna stay bone stock as much as I'd love to adapt to a later radiator, etc(I have a spare awaiting as the top tank blew out at the rear near fill neck) But for the time being to get it home, Im gonna get a section of heater hose and wrap the hole area and clamp the heck out of it.
If anyone knows where I can get a line, give a shout....or any other advise
While you have it a part you can replace it with a standard tranny cooler. Just thread fittings into the side of the tranny where you disconnected it. Then run tranny cooler lines forward to either radiator or after market cooler.
