Shell rotella / valve seals

I have been using different brands and weights of oils to quiet down the tapping from the head on my 76 f-100 300 I-6. Someone here had been talking up the use of rotella for cleaning the crud out of the engine so I tried it. The engine used to blow blue smoke on start ups for the last year. It has been 3 weeks now and not one sign of smoking and the tapping is less. I have been told that this oil used for deisel engines has swelled up the valve seals(for the time being). Not sure if this is true or not? The oil pressure has been a solid 50 psi with the 15w40 Has anybody else had similar experience.

There is nothing in that oil capable of swelling seals and ......... guessing whomever said that about the 76 model 300ci valve seal never saw what they look like or how they operate because swelling that style seal would not help anyway .

You have posted that the motor blew smoke last year . Was that by chance during or after winter when the possibilty of fuel dillution impacted engine ring seal and thinned the oil ?

I would recommend using a high mileage oil that will actually do some real cleaning overtime . These are offered in viscosity's more friendly to your gas motor if you don't live on the Equator .

The Mobil HM or Castrol HM come to mind for this engine .

Google search Mobil Drive Clean Plus High Mileage Oil + press release ....and you will find some results of Mobils testing of their new HM syn blend oil that costs about 2 bucks a quart

Thank you for the reply, this is the heaviest weight oil I have ever used and was concerned enough to put in a mech. gauge to watch the psi. It had been blowing smoke throughout all seasons. I'll try the Mobil or Castrol today and see what happens. I had planned on doing a compression test, both dry and wet and a vacuum test also, to see what condition the rings and valves are in.

You simply have put in a thick enough oil to stop the oil from leaking down the intake valve guides. Rotella will not really clean out a lot of existing deposits, but will prevent further buildup. I am a proponent of using 15W-40 in older engines. Why spend double for "high mileage" oil?

Is two dollars " current pricing for most the HM's " a quart double the price of an HDEO that does not use the modern calcium and other chemistry of a well formulated HM oil that's designed for a purpose ?

BTW, which of the below is used in these dedicated diesel engine oils and which are used in modern passenger car oils and which can also give extra anti-wear protection ?

Calcium alkyl phenol sulfide, polyolefin phosphorosulfide mixture
Calcium long chain alkaryl sulfonate
Calcium long chain alkylphenate
Calcium long chain alkyl phenate
Calcium long chain alkyl phenate sulfide
Calcium long chain alkyl salicylate
Calcium long chain alkyl phenolic amine

How much is a gallon jug of the best HDEO Fleet oil ? 7 bucks ?

Fleet oils are not "dedicated" diesel oils or they would not carry API SL. HM oils are about $3 in the same stores around here where fleet oils sell for $7 a gallon. On sale, both are less, but in the same proporton. ZDDP still gives the best anti-wear and anti-oxidation protection. Modern fleet oils have plenty of modern Calcium-based additives for deposit control and buffering. The main feature of most HM oils is seal conditioner. If that is what you need, fine. If actual wear of metal parts has increased clearances and oil consumption, higher viscosity is necessary, seal conditioner wont work. So, try the different options and use what works best for your engine. Rotella stopped the smoke.
