I have an 1987 ford f150 4.9 with 140,000 miles . When i run the engine i hear a clicking sound, the clicking sound increases when i go faster. The ford dealer said he though it was a bad lifter. What happens if i dont fix it? How do i know which lifter is bad? I was told to check for a loose rocker arm under the valve cover..
The best advice I could give you is if you decide to change the lifters...just change them all. That way you don't have to hunt for the one that is clicking.
My Haynes manual says to use a Magnetic Valve Tappet Rremover to pull out the 12 lifters. Is that the only way to remove them, is so maybe i can rent one someweres. Also do i need to replace the 12 push rodsto? Should i use engine assembly lube on the new lifter or just motor oil?
Update: I adding a bottle of motor flush and then changed the oil (10w 30) and filter. I added a bottle of engine restore with the oil change. Now the lifters chatter very little at start up. Then after a minute when the engine dials down the noise is gone. When it tap on the gas pedal it gets real load if I keep my foot down on the pedal it goes away. Is it ok to run it like this? Did i just mask the problem? Can this be an engine timming issue?
With the mileage on your engine, I would advise against ever using a Kerosene base flush. I would recommend you drain your oil, replace with Castrol 10w40, also add one quart Reslone....Drive for a couple days. I have had very good luck with it getting lifters to pump up. If this doesn`t work, drain a quart out and try Sea Foam or Slick 50, or Dura Lube. I have a 95 4.9 and I love it. I do have a very slight valvetrain chatter. Every 300 I`ve heard has this. Mine I believe is normal, yours is not. Try these before changing out lifters.... Mine have lasted 170k miles. I hope they go another 100k like my buddys has. Todd
Rislone, I`m sorry I spelled that wrong. By the way, drive the crap out of it. It will last longer than you will ever imagine. Keep your engine clean internally and externally. Keep your oil changed. front-end greased and maintained, keep your tires rotated every 6k make sure it`s aligned properly . Don`t put HOG tires on it. It WILL LAST YOU. You`ll just have to replace gen. maint. items...Todd
