how hard will it be to get the same power out of a 89 7.3 as you would a psd?would a turbo and intercooler do it or is it just too far in the hole to begin with?what options are there?thanks.
You can still get power out of the old 7.3 but it isn't as easy as running a chip or tuner. A turbo and an intercooler are a good start. After the turbo you definetly want an exhaust system and some guages though.
An ATS turbo alone will put you right up there with the stock 7.3 PSD's and way in front of the 93 - 94 IDI turbos.
The air intake may need some work depending on the year/style intake you have.
The 2.25" exhaust has to go.
A pyrometer is a must if you do not want to cook your investment.
I should have taken pictures of what a 7.3 IDI with an ATS turbo and three inch dual stacks can do to a driveshaft, rear end yoke and new Spicer u-joints.
The bill was 750 for what it did to the driveline.
Those guys really know thier stuff when it comes to the Ford Diesels, and so do the guys at Swamps. May be buying Powerstroke off friend that needs injectors so she will be swamped if he decides to sell and gives me a price!
Ford did not want to fight the 3" downpipe between the block and cab, so they threw a 2.25 inch downpipe in the parking lot for a week and let everyone drive over it to flatten it out so it would drop right in.
Then the necked the turbo outlet down to 2.25" so the pipe would fit it.
2.25" pipe = 3.9 sq in area
3" pipe = 7 sq in area
That is 179 % better flow at the same back pressure. And that is not even taking the flattening into account.
The IDIs had compresion ratios of around 26 while the PSD's are around 16, this limits the boost on the older trucks. Pushed real hard they would hit 13 psi while the PSD's can hit up to 30 psi. When you start putting that much preasure on head gaskets in the old IDI's they had a tendency to blow but most of these after market turbos are wastegated to prevent this!
