What engines would fit into my 89 bronco II 4X4?

Engines
2.8L, 2.9L, 5.0L, and the 5.7L with minor mods. What goal is it that you are trying to reach?

The 4.0 is also a good idea is all most a plugin for some year's. that's what i am doin to my truck but it's up to you.
