FORD seems to think Off Road driving isn't too "hard on" their "4X4 front end". Using common sense "Rough roads" should be no problem.
Like any other mechanical device "Built FORD Tough" doesn't mean it can't be broken. Presumably the driver will exercise good judgement & match their speed to the conditions. Its generally understood that the harder you run a vehicle the more likely repairs will be needed. That being said, any driver can be surprised by unexpected obstacles on any surface they choose to drive over. Some of the worst are defects in otherwise smooth roads, where high speed results in extremely hard hits. If your idea of "Rough roads" includes boulders tall enough to smack differentials, gas tanks & tranny pans FORD offers skid plates to add protection.
Ever hear the term Roadbed Collision? During a spring thaw I drove into a wicked pothole on an interstate. There were several hub caps thrown off in the dirty snow bank & a car abandoned w/front wheel at a ghastly angle. The deteriorated concrete was impossible to avoid & the collision caused damage to both tires & wheels on that side. I was amazed to learn the term & discover my insurance covered it.
Consistant hard use over "rough roads" will accelerate wear on "front end" components. Such severe service prematurely age shocks & suspension joints & bushings. You'd need to check alignment & tires more often.
I got 251k on my truck and it runs straight and I do take my time and avoid any holes that I can. My dads got a 96 Dodge 4x4 and the roads beat the guts out of the front end. I just dont want it to happen to my truck!
