Does anyone know what ohm the Expy sub is? Mine is blown and dealer want's $369 for replacement. Parts man said get aftermarket but had no suggestions and had no info on ohms.
I'm going with after market. I can get parts and labor for around 170 but my amp still works. You hear the sound but the actual speaker makes a horrible noise. I hear that the dealer speakers are expensive and not that great to begin with.
Mine was already blown when I bought it (didn't realize it when I drove it off the lot of the Nissan dealership, and of course it's not under warranty) and the Ford dealer said it was $81 for the speaker and an extra $150 just to put it in. I'm definitely just going with some aftermarket subs and amps now, not too sure about the ohms on the factory one though.
BlckExpo02, if you could get the part number for that speaker I would greatly appreciate it. Ive been trying for months to get a part number from Ford who tells us the subwoofer is a complete unit and on back order for months. And it sells as a unit for about 400.00.... IF it were avaliable.
HomerWinzlow,
I'll call up there tommorrow. He actually said he could sell me the speaker that day if I wanted to try putting it in myself to save on labor costs, so I guess they have them in stock here.
Ok I just got off the phone with Mobile Audio in Mesa Arizona and here is the scoop.
If you can hear sound but it rattling or noisey most likley it just the speaker.
There two sizes most are 8 inch but some are a smaller 6".
I have an 8" and they will replace it with a MTX speker parts and labor for $125
85 for the speaker and 40 labor. I have not heard it yet but they say it's a better speaker and I will enjoy the quality more than the factory solution.
I hope this helps I'll let you know how it works out next week.
This only applies to the 03, I don't know about other years. The 8" sub is a dual voice coil with each coil measuring 1.2 ohms. The coils are not wired together as there are two sets of +/- running from the amp to the sub.
You could get a dual voice coil 2 ohm sub.. the amp will put out less wattage to the sub but it should work. Some have suggested you bridge the amp but I'm not confident all 2 channel amps can be bridged.
Crutchfield indicated that each channel (and therefore voice coil) gets 30watts RMS from the Amp.
For $4.99 Crutchfield sells a Master Sheet for the 03 Expy (likely other years too) that includes step by step instructions on how to remove the sub. The sub can't just be unscrewed from the front and pulled out, there is also a screw running from behind the sub enclosure into the back of the sub speaker, that is why it all must come out.
I recently replaced a blown sub in 98 Expy. Takes about an hour to disassemble some trim, access the Sub box and replace the Sub. Not as bad as I thought. I replaced the speaker with a Kicker Comp 8" (found on eBay new for ~$40). Steps to getting at the box (one piece with amp and speaker screwed to the frame). Pulled out 3rd row seat..removed rear hatch trim, pulled up carpet at corners, removed a "key" floor screw to the side panel...took off speaker trim, disconnected seat belts to access box, gently pulled the panel away from the side...3 screws holding box to frame...disconnect 2 wire harnesses, unscrewed speaker from front, removed magnet bolt in back. Replaced with Kick Comp...holes "almost" line up..reassembled...only one piece of trim to take note of the rear hatch trim..side panel slips up under this trim. All in all not too bad.
