My friend has a 91 Explorer w/ 4.0, auto trans, 4X4. He lost his keys and needs to do something to get his truck started. Is there a way to remove the key switch on the column in the locked position without pulverizing it? I know that this is a cinch with the switch in the unlocked position (Haynes, Chilton) but without the key this is not an option. Is it cheaper to have the existing switch rekeyed as opposed to getting a replacement?
ok a few of things here number on if it is the original lock cylinder call the place where you got it and have them give you a key code and have a ford dealer make you a new key.
the second option is go out and buy your self a dent puller screw it into your key hole and pull the inner cylinder out(might take a few hammers. Next remove the underside of the driverside dash and remove your key juction boIgnition selector) and move the rod downward then you should be able to remove the outer shell of the key cylinder install a new one and make lots of copies
I have the same problem, today I tried to remove the old ignition but was un-able. I don't have a dent puller but I will try to get one tommorow or drill the lock out. What I am un-sure about is what to do once I get the old lock out. What exactly is "and remove your key juction boIgnition selector) and move the rod downward then you should be able to remove the outer shell of the key cylinder"?? Wish me luck and thanks for the advice. Lou
Call a locksmith to make you a key. It should be under a $100.00 to make a key with NO DAMAGE. If you are in my area (Rhode Island) It would run you about 65.00. You might damage the switch rack ect. it could run you into big dollars for the repair...
