Need Help Installing Ignition Cylinder

I removed the lock cylinder on my '79 F-150 with no problems. Now I can't seem to line up the new cylinder to make it go back in. Haynes says "insert the key and turn it to the accessory position. Push the barrel and key into the switch assembly until it is fully seated and then turn the key to the lock position." It's not going that easy for me. The cylinder seems to be offset and won't fully seat. There must be some trick. Any help would be appreciated.

I used the wire in the hole to remove the cylinder, but it seems to have no effect in replacing the cylinder and the manuals say nothing about it for re-installation. There are two spring clips in the bottom of the switch socket that seem to be giving me fits. I'm also unsure of which slot in the switch socket to line up with the ridge on the top of the cylinder. In the "lock" position, the key should be straight up and down with the "pin hole" on top.
