'96 F-150 throwout bearing removal.
New the the board (though not a Ford owner, doing a job for brother. Help ASAP would be great)
I am replacing the clutch for a 1996 f-150 with 5.0 liter with manual transmission and 4 wheel drive . The transmission is out and waiting on the flywheel to be returned. I can not get the throwout bearing off though. There seems to be some sort of retaining ring but nothing visible to show why it is still on. Anyone know how to get the bearing off?

is it the externally mounted slave cylinder?im looking at a crappy chilton manuall right now. but from the diagram it looks like it's just spring loaded and you should be able to turn it and remove. of course this badly written manual does not mention the removal of the bearing.

The slave is behind that spring... but no luck on the push and turn way. I have the pages from chiltons manual and your right, no mention of removing the bearing. I have 3 hours till the return of the flywheel. ugh.. fords.. blah..
I thought Chevy was bad cause they always fall apart.. but when a Ford does, its just so hard to fix....

Looking at the factory manual for my 95 it looks like there is a bolt in the throwout bearing/slave cylinder assy that is toward the engine and in line with the hydraulic line on the slave cylinder. If you will click on my name and send me an eMail I will copy and paste the blowup diagram of the assembly and send it to you as an MS Word attachment. Well.. What we got so far is that the slave must come off, It appears that the slave cylinder, spring, throwout bearing, and a retaining sleeve all come off the shaft in one piece.. New problem, now can not get the quick connect off the slave cylinder line.
EDIT: The connector has a gold metal case, then a white rubber/plastic piece, and then a copper color part that the fluid tube goes into. All pictures and instructions say that it pretty much just pulls apart. I have used a flat head screwdriver to try and get the lip of the copper piece to pry it up with no luck, I have also tried a pliers to grab, twist and pull with no luck.
For anyone else doing a clutch in this kind of truck.. DON'T!!! take it to a pro!

Thank you all for giving any help as quick as you did. All that is now being waited on is a gasket that was located on the backing plate.
The Slave cylinder came with a new throwout bearing, and I did end up getting the quick connect out (though when the new one was put on, the white plastic part fell off so there is now no way to take it apart again.)
I am a Chevy owner so I don't think I will be on this board very much though I am wondering if there is a section some where on here were I could write up some tips and tricks and do a step by step helpfull instruction post? There are a few tricks that can be done that will save lots of time and are not listed in the manual.
