Ok, here is what is happening. Truck died on the highway last week. Wife said she thinks the alt. went out because the little light on the dash was on and the dash gauge showed it wasn't charging. Well, she kept driving it until it totally died, then left if on side of the highway. Went, picked up a new alt, put it on, jumped the truck off and drove it home. Put the battery charger on it and left it till morning. Next morning, got up, drove the truck around and all was fine. Got in it that night, and the battery light was light up on the dash. Turned the truck off, restarted, and noticed that it did not come on right away, but about 15 seconds later, would fade from dim to bright until it was fully on. Doesn't matter what the engine RMP's are the light stays on. Turn it off, start it back up and 15 seconds later, the light comes back on. Have not had a chance to test the new alt. yet. Should it test out OK, where should I look next? Batteries are about 1.5 years old.
Ok, I think I may have it narrowed down. Will a sticking glow play relay cause the alternator to burn out? If it is sticking open, how can I test it? And if it is sticking open, is it the relay itself or is there something else that opens and closes the glow plug relay?
