I heard the same about the FIPK's: "they aren't worth it". Heard that from a large majority of people I know who have (read: "had") them. All the cold air intake does is look better when you open the hood. Otherwise, it's the same angle, the same diameter, same everything. It makes a little more noise, which in itself gets old because the noise makes the engine sound likes it's straining harder rather than making the engine sound better.
IMHO, if you're compelled to get an aftermarket air filter, just get the air filter, not the whole FIPK set-up. There's also alot of recent murmur's that K&N "ain't all it's cracked up to be", so perhaps a little research will uncover the validity of those murmur's ? If so, maybe a high-flow throw-away air filter is the better way to go ?
I have the Tymar air intake. It uses a huge Donaldson filter as seen HERE. Let's in more air than I will ever need and keeps out more dirt than the factory filter.
Since most of the guys at 6.0Lpsd & Flatratetech recommend it, I use the factory donaldson for the 6.0. Spendy, but its supposed to be good for 30k. From what I've seen of prices for the "washable", I figure I'm good for 120 - 150k. And from comments at other sites, guess I'd only consider the AFE pro-guard 7 if I had to get something else.
The factory filter also does a much better job filtering than any of the reusable filters. The Donaldson specs are 99.8% for a clean filter, 99.9% when it has some dirt on it. K&N's numbers, as posted on their own website, range from 97-99%. That doesn't seem like much, but it is. Take a clean Donaldson paper filter against a clean K&N filter. The K&N is letting in 15 times more dirt/dust. Again, not my numbers, but the numbers posted by K&N and Donaldson.
I had a K&N on my 94 460 and never had a problem. Used my truck alot at the Pismo dunes. Cleaned a ton of sand outta the filter and never had engine problems. I think what people are running into with oil gauze filter is too much or not enough oil. Too much and it blows into and coats the MAF and not enough and you let dirt in.
Any Comments on STP air filters? What would you choose between STP or Fram?
I've had a few bad experiences with Fram where the orange seal would seperate from the filter element. That happened twice with the PSD before going to a Tymar setup and once on my old Tbird. The Tymar intake with the Donaldson filter seems to be doing really well for me, silicon levels on my oil analysis dropped from 22 to between 3-4 with the tymar.
I'm not sure if they do or not. A lot of aftermarket companies don't build an intake for the 6.0 because they believe that it is already good. It also uses a Donaldson filter like the Tymar which, unlike any other filter, is hydrophobic. You can only get these under the Donaldson and Baldwin names (and sometimes Napa will have a Donaldson packaged in their box). I'd stick with what came from the factory if I were you.

Just my $.02,
DS
I had a FIPK on my Jeep 5.9 Limited after it crossed the 100K mile mark and for IT - it felt like 30 HP more... made it a new Jeep !!!
And I haven't decided on one yet.. (my stock one is still fine after 32K miles) but Choctaw Bob just got a blackstone report after 5K miles and his silicone was less than mine !
And with stock everything except (the splitting intercooler hose) and the K&N, he got 12 HP and more torque than I did at dyno day and I had a turbo back flow thru muffler...
Not sure what that says, but it must mean something....
