I have a 1981 f100 ranger w/6 cyl and 1 bbl carb. If It is not started within about two hours time, you have to pour a little gas into the carb to get it to start!!!!!! After starting it runs great and turns on and off with no problems. I have ckecked the inlet filter, line from pump, air cleaner and every thing else under the sun that would impede the flow with no luck! Anyone have any ideas??
sounds to me like the fuel in carb bowl might be draining out. it's been a few years, but that seems like that might cause it. Have you ever rebuilt the carb? Carb kits are cheap, I'd try finding a carb at a junkyard, get a kit, rebuild it an swap it. If that seems too much, maybe you can try some gumout carb cleaner, it may just be a tiny bit of debris causing the problem.
I saw one like this where the carb gasket was dried out and when the choke came on, it just sucked air around the base of the carb instead of drawing fuel into the carb. Just a thought!
if it's the gasket, maybe try spraying some starting fluid around the base of the carb while having a helper crank the motor. I'd disconnect the fuel line to keep it from priming things and you having to wait a couple more hours to check things again.
I think maybe i've located the culprit responsible for having to constantly prime my carb! The hose w/associated emissions cannisters coming from the smog pump to a bung beneath the carb was broken off at the bung. The carb was sucking air instead of gas. I have no idea what the little cannister connected to the bung that broke is called. The fitting screws into the intake under the carb is like a pipe fitting. I can't get the fitting out so i have cemented a coin over the hole into the intake. Later today or tommorow, I'll try starting it and see what happens.
Thanks to all you guys who offered your opinions and help. I'm hoping this takes care of the problem!!!
