I have a 1995 4.0L ranger that has developed an odd problem. Only after it has warmed up, when I accelerate from 1000rpm to about 3000rpm, I get a periodic hesitation that kind of throws you forward in your seat. If I accelerate slowly, it doesn't hesistate. When the engine is cold, it accelerates just fine. I replaced the mass airflow sensor after my computer reader said it was bad but it didn't solve the problem. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Aaron

No other codes but about 3 years ago, it did generate a code relating to the EGR valve. I pulled it, cleaned the carbon out, and reset the trouble code. It has not generated that code since. Other than the MAF sensor, a thermostat and the EGR valve, this engine has been trouble free for 90,000 miles.
An egr opening too soon can cause the condition. When was the last time the fuel filer was replaced? On another note, and it would be a rather odd time of the year, but any chance there is some water in the gas?
Thinking along those same lines, I replaced the fuel filter about 500 miles ago. This problem has been going on for 5 months now so I've had many fuel fillings and wouldn't think I'd have any water in the tank.
i have the same problem - no codes, hesitation while warm, surging. mine also stumbles bad right after a warm start. if you figure it out, post it. i am getting good mileage, and no codes. i figure it is fuel related. this truck sat for almost a year, so i figured water in the gas. i have been adding gas treatment to every tank, and have not had much luck.
