any suggestion for a 302 in my '91 f-150 w/ 160k miles?
symptoms: Truck can no longer break the tires free when flooring it from a dead stop.
Truck seems to hesitate a bit and sometimes makes a ticking noise during moderate acceleration at highway speeds (like accelerating to keep speed up going uphill).
Truck doesn't always seem to want to downshift when accelerating at highway speeds, it is necessary to put the pedal almost all the way down for it to shift for a pass.
When accelerating from a stop there seems to be a short delay before the engine gets going, it's not a hesitation, it's just a ...delay.
Fuel milage has gotten lousy, but that may be related to the other problems.
The engine runs good at all speeds as long as you don't try to accelereate. Also has a good idle at 700RPM.
it has been ticking/stuttering at acceleration since i got it (3 years ago), but only recently did i notice the lack of power.
Maybe fuel pump relay my 91 is having same problem the mechanic at work told me to tap the top of the relays when running my motor calfed out for a sec. then reved up not getin proper fuel del. to injectors
nope. she idles fine and runs fine at all speeds. the problem only comes up while accelerating at crusing speeds.
ex: i'm crusin' along at 65 and i wanna pass grandma moses in her 64 buick doing 45 in the passing lane. so i press on the accelerator, to speed up, but i don't give it enough gas to downshift. that's when it happens. *tick tick* with stuttereing (very mild stutter). it goes away completely if i give it enough gas to downshift.
I had a similar problem with my 89 f-150. I ran the codes and everything came up okay. I then replaced the distributor cap, rotor and plug wires. Turns out one of my wires was so corroded inside it couldnt have been firing right if at all.(cylinder8) It now runs better than ever. I couldnt believe it was something so simple. Mine had a tick under acceleration, a miss and was sluggish. Sounds just like your problem. I hope this helps.
Seems like my '94 is at the beginning of the same symptoms. I was wanting to put some better performance wires/cap/rotor/plugs in it than the same old standard stuff but I'm at a loss as to what to look for in a good set up. Any suggestions? I was thinking of calling Summit and seeing what they recommend. It is amazing what new plugs/wires/cap and rotor will do for an engine. Good luck 3eggOmlet, hope it works.
how old are you. i had a 91 with a 5.0 and it did the same stuff after a while, along with blowby. you wanna know what it was. my lead foot.i was 16 then now i am 19 but still a heavy foot just not to bad. it gets costly
heh. i wouldn't say i have a lead foot. bronze maybe, but not lead. i'm sure i have a bit of blowby since the truck slowly consumes oil, but i think i'll try stretch's idea of cap/rotor/wires first. strangly i did the cap/rotor/wires/plugs/coil about 2 years ago and it didn't cure the tick, also the stuttereing seemed to get worse...
perhaps i'll get a new msd distributor, if i can't find anything else wrong.
I have the same problem with my '92 Bronco 5.0. When I step on the gas, it starts to go, then pauses, then starts accelerating again and I have noticed that the problem is gardually getting worse. Also, same as 3eggOmelet, I have to put the gas pedal to the floor just to try and get it to down shift at highway speeds. The engine idles good and it runs good at constant speeds and there are no codes. I have recently changed plugs, cap, rotor, air filter and it didn't make a difference. Any ideas?
it may not at first if it has all of that emission stuff. i forgot about that stuff. it is cheap to rebuild your heads. you could do it yourself or have it done at a machine shop. it is fairly cheap and i would recomend it.
DID YOU CHECK THE RELAYS! when they @!@@ up the truck will run good at almost all speeds and idle until you hammer on it feels like pluged fuel filter or bad spark it pings and stuff
IM talking fuel pump relays under your hood just try to change them plug and all they get green and dont make a good conection they are cheep to change and did you check the codes??
