I have a rebuilt '73 Lincolin 460 installed in my '79 Bronco. Modifications include a Ford Truck rear sump pan with the proper pickup tube and dip stick and a Melling M-84D Oil pump. all seemed well. However, in less than 200 Miles the distributor/oil pump drive gear failed. Whats up.
i had similar problem and it turned out to be the bushing at the base of the distibitor was wore causing it to wander. chewed up on gear and 3 or 4 cap and rotors before i figured it out
I have the same set up only using a 76 lincoln block, and have had no problems. I had a similar problem with a 351W in a 77 F-100 turned out that the oil pump bolts had backed out a little and let the shaft wonder which ate up 3 distributor gears and on the final one I chewed the cam gear up too. When I took dropped the pan I found the loose bolts. Don't know if that will help but I hope it does
Thanks for Your input. I recently replaced the Oil Pump Drive Shaft with A heavier one From ARP. At that time my pump attachment bolts were tight. I do believe that You have pointed me in the right direction.
What type of dist gear (s) are you installing?? If you have an aftermarket camshaft installed you may need to be useing a "hardened" (bronze) dist. gear, available at any high performance shop or mail order catalog from summit or jegs (MSD part#MSD8581, price $40). The camshaft is made of harder steel than the stock gear and will destroy a stock dist gear quickly.
