I am buying a 77 F-150 4x4 this weekend. It has no engine under the hood, the engine that came in it is a 351M and will come with the truck but needs rebuilt. The seller is also giving me a 302 that is ready to run now with it's own bellhousing and new flywheel, all I need is a clutch and fork. Will the 302 use the same engine mounts as the 351M or will I need to change the engine mounts out? Thanks for any imput.
"bowties in the rearview mirror"
BTW ever wonder why ford didn't put the 302 in anything more than 2wd F150 in the 70s (never have seen a F250 with a factroy 302).
Anything is possible, I hadn't seen a 300 in one until I went out in Western South Dakota where the gas pumps are few and far between. I realize they have good torque, just had thought up til then that the 250's and higher always had a V8 351 and up. I was wrong!!!
its well known (by most ford people) that ford didn't list the 302 as an option in any 4x4 in the 70s.
Ford had other motors that would do the job better.
your options for a 79 F150 4x4 were 300I6, 351M, 400.
In the 80s and 90s the 300i6, 302, 351W, and 460 was the only truck motors ford made so there options was pretty limited.
I'm not quite as familiar on the 70's stuff, more on the eighties, but all the 250's I had in the 70's group are v8, 2 400's one 360 original, 390 later. I just wasn't aware of 6's in anything over 1/2 til I saw the 86 with it.
the purpose of a four wheel drive truck IMHO is not to leave chevys in the rearview mirror....unless its in the mud.
We have an 83 F-150 4x4 that is My wifes (Zellian) truck, Im rather impressed with it actually, Im going to buy a 302 from Oldhalftons and have it rebuilt, will stuff a stroker crank in it while Im at it, do some aftermarket head stuff, and Im sure with her plans for just 33's and a 4 inch lift it will do quite nicely.
Any stroke improvement will help torque and cubes. Unfortunately the block does not have enuf room to reduce angularity with the increase in cubes. I have driven too many 302's that were just plain dogs in a heavy vehicle. None of them were strokers thoThey did OK if you could keep the RPMs up around 4 grand.
