Ok, I'm new here, and I have a question for everyone. I'm looking at a 1989 F250 4x4. It had a 351W in it (the engine is blown) and I have a 302 (1986) that I wanted to install in it. What I was wondering is will it just bolt right in with the motor mounts from the 351? Also will it connect upto the trans with the bell housing that is there? I was told that it should, but I'm not sure. thanks for all your help in advance, it's much appreciated.
I have not attempted this swap or anything, but I think the 302 will "bolt in" anywhere a 351 used to sit. Bellhousing patterns are the same, and engine mounting points are the same. However, the blocks are not the same. The 351 with its longer stroke has a block with a higher deck height than a 302, i.e. the heads are higher up and farther apart so exhaust might be a problem. The 351, I think, has a different firing order than a 302 and I'm pretty sure you can't use a 351 computer with a 302. I don't know how these engines are balanced or flywheel weights or any of that stuff, but seeing as how Ford likes to change things all the time you might want to check that out. Lots of guys here have done this and can tell you all about it I'm sure.
302 and 351 firing orders are different. 302 and 460 firing orders are the same though. I would strongly recommend against putting something as small as a 302 into an 3/4 ton 4x4. It will be severely underpowered unless you build up the 302. Why not sell the 302 and use the money to rebuild the 351?
