Extended Cranking To Start

Just a quick question for the 6.0L Powerstroke owners. I have recently purchased an F-350 PS, and it seems like it takes a long time to start (like 5 or so seconds). We also have a 95 Dodge with the Cummings, and it starts right up by almost thinking about turning the key. Cold or not the Cummings starts up in at least half the time. Is this normal for the 6.0?

Thanks,

DTR

I've got a 03' 6.0 and it turns over in about 1-2 seconds, but my truck has only been flashed once. I have heard a couple of 04' 6.0's and they seem to take longer to turn over. I don't know if any diesel any starts as fast as the older Dodges do, I drive a 89' Dodge cummins on the farm that has 490000 miles on it and it seems like it starts when my finger just touches the key!

My 03 Ex 6-oh will start almost as quick as our gasser....
maybe faster... and I rarely wait for the glow plugs :-)

I know, I know - I should, but it starts right up and is under a 100k warranty so......

My 03 varies. Sometimes starts up immediately, sometimes 2 seconds or so. I haven't really given it much thought. Doesn't matter.

I always wait a second or 2 after the glow plug indicator light goes out. Cold, warm, or hot. Starts like a gasser.

a couple of seconds after the glow plug light goes out, I hear a kind of thump. It may just be air ducts for a/c closing, not sure, but mine starts right up if I wait til I hear it. Any earlier and it takes 2 or 3 seconds to crank. probably just my imagination

I believe that is the vacuum pump. Since your 6.0 doesn't have manifold vacuum, it has a pump to maintain vacuum for the various devices.

Thanks sb,
I guess I'm just letting the fuel pump work a little longer?

Even if I wait for the glow plugs ( I usually do), it still seems to crank a long time before taking off. I am used to the way the cummings starts, like bob6.0 stated. It is almost like the batteries are week. I doesn't cause any problems, just a personal preferance.

I seldom wait for the glow plugs, but it's really warm down here. In winter i forced myself to wait. Never had any noticable delay in firing off, but I'm an early build '03 with the may/june '03 flash.
