When my 93 AWD started using water internally because of blown headgasket. We started looking at options. The Freestar is not AWD. The only AWD vehicle that will carry 7 or 8 people & have as much luggage space as the Aerostar is the Chevy Astro. We measured & looked. The Chrysler van is also & option but cost much more than the Astro. According to dealers this is the last year for the Astro passenger van & will only be sold as a cargo van. All the auto companies are moving back to the station wagon look, aka the old AMC Eagles. I had one. It seems like every car I have they stop making it. Maybe they will come out with an AWD drive Crown Victoria wagon.
I had a pair of them in the 2wd version. What goes around comes around. In about 10 or 15 years Aerostar II hybrid maybe born .
I would not jump to quickly on the AWD 500 bandwagon until we see some real life results of the new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) or 6-speed automatic transmission. Ford (Along with the other big 3) has a bad history of making poor transverse ATX's.
I have not test drove one yet, but judging by the pics, it looks awefully carmped for a large mid size car. That might change once I get behind the wheel. To bad Ford can't make it a RWD with a 5.4 Boss engine and 5-speed manual tranny to combat the new Dodge Magnum. hhhmmm, or they could import the Australian Ford Falcon. As seen Here!
I would still prefer that they bring back the Aerostar for overall hauling capability that a car cannot do.
There must be a market for a reborn Star, there just is nothing like it available anymore. I love my Star, had an 89 3.0 shorty, but sold it at about 240,000 miles. bought a 94 EB ext with 4.0 and LOADED. Had 133,000 when bought less than a year ago, now has 153.000. It has a leather interior, so apparently it was an option on the EBs, mine has 4 captains chairs and 3rd seat makes a bed. Was a one owner and never smoked in! The owers sold it because with 4 growing kids they wanted more room.
