I am curious to know how many people (like me) wish that they never quit making the aerostar. I for one prefer the rear wheel drive and heavier-duty design of the aerostar any day to the windstar, and find that despite what others say it was a very reliable vehicle for the most part. They are very versatile and nice to drive also. And Ford no longer has a vehicle to compete with Chevy's Astro van which is RWD also btw I have owned a '91 Astro and I was actually pleased with it untill the paint started to peel off of it. But thats besides the point. I often wonder what the Aerostar would look like now and what new options it would have. I would also like to have seen one with a 4.6l v8 in it, if thats not getting to carried away lol. Let me know what you think about the aerostar coming back and tell me about some options you would have liked to have seen while it was still on the production lines. (like other engines or a second sliding door etc.) look forward to your posts!
I would love to see them bring back the Aerostar. It looked great for 10+years it was out. Just bring back the old style body, with different head/signal lights.
Options:
5.0L v8 tow package
Eddie Bower Edition
Tach on the instrument cluster
16" Rims
Duel Exauhst
Sports Fan edition with a real tail gate.
Sport eddition with firmer suspension, 4.6L Cobra, and fog lights.
With the major manufacturers involved with promoting the hybrid-crossover type vehicles these days, I could easily envision a reincarnation of the Aerostar as a "family recreation vehicle" (FRV). With all the towable toys people have these days, jet-skis, ATV, snowmobiles, cycles, sailboats/boards, etc., there is a niche for a vehicle that holds more than 2 people that can haul a family and the 'toy' trailer. With gas prices going up, big Expedition and Excursion types are costly to operate. Pickups are limited seating, thus making a vehicle like the Aerostar the perfect concept FRV - roomy, rugged and versatile.
I like 93nighthawk's recommended features. The one outstanding feature that would really set the Aerostar apart from all other vehicles on the market.......... a tilt forward front nose section that would permit the entire front section from the cowl forward to be released and tip forward for easy maintenance access. Similar to the front cab tipping big rigs.
Hey I would love it. We bought them because of the rear wheel towing capacity. I could tow a trailer (23Ft) and still have a daily driver. I put 150K to 200K on the 2 that I had with no major problems.
I had Quad captain chairs. The new Freestar seats are no comparison to those in comfort and size.
Those are some awesome ideas, Ya it would really be sweet to have the whole front to tip open like a semi, I never actually thought of that myself but that would solve alot of my problems, Im sure something like that could be custom fabricated though! And a Tach would be hella nice too. I would like to have seen leather seats, Correct me if i am wrong but as far as I know they didnt make any with leather interior. I think of My Aerostar as a truck, It seems to handle like one and it isnt like other weak *** minivans out there like the plymouth voyager and caravan (which I like to call the K-Car Vans because thats what they are) But The one aftermarket part above all id like to see would be Clear aftermarkt tail lights and european style xenon head lights/lenses. And having all bucket seats in place of the benches would be nice. Oh and my van was purchased as a 5 passenger but i would like to know if there is an easy way to convert it into a 7 passenger. I also wish i had the extended one. Mine is a 1994 shorty sport its light blue with silver trim and blue interior i really should put some pics of it on car domain.
Ill have to agree with CanadianCrew The front seats in my Aerostar are even more comfortable than those in my '03 sport-trac and the only vehicle i have that comes close to them in comfort is my 1981Toyota cressida Luxury Edition.
May I add larger front brakes, lighter removable rear seats and an OEM rear swaybar? I'd buy another new one today, with or without all our wishlist items.
I call our E-4wd aero an SUV "Sport utility VAN" ha ha. I mean. its bigger than an excursion i think. certainly bigger than most real SUV's. It it were only taller......
imagine the market for a real family sized SUV, picture an aerostar up on 16" rims and a real 4WD suspension. I think the the V-8 powered SUV aerostar would CRUSH the SUV market.
by adding a few of the popular mini-van options of "today" like sliding doors on both sides would be nice. BUT if there were a door on the drivers side too, there could not be a middle seat as big as ours... besides, the rear sliding window is big enough for my 3 year old to climb in and out of anyways!
lighter rear benches would be nice. but would that come at the cost of comfort?? the new freestar seats are very thin and stiff. I dont like em...
flip forward hood and fenders??? HELL YEAH! awesome idea! but doi you think ford really wants it to be easier for us to work on our own aeros?? NO!
A new aero would compete with the Explorer somewhat, so it won't happen. RWD... 3 rows of seats... 4.0L or 4.6L powered RWD and 4WD... sounds like a decked out explorer. But they couldn't charge as much for the van since it's not an SUV. Would be cool though. Love the flip down front idea.
This may be a bit off topic but for some reason my Insurance papers Have My Aerostar Listed as a "station Wagon" why? I really don't know. And another wierd thing is that even though It is insured as a Commercial Vehicle We still have car plates on it, hmm u'd think they'd make us put truck plates on it, Anyone else have thiers listed as something other than a van?
