What kind of A/C system does my 1993 Explorer have (R12 or what?).
Thanks.

It should have an R12 system unless someone has changed it. The '94 used the 134a. Somewhere under the hood there will be a sticker telling you what the system capacity is. If someone has changed it, there should be a sticker for that too. Check to see if it has the retro-fit valve fittings. I have a 93 and changed mine over when the compressor went kapooie. I put on a new compressor, flushed the system, changed the seals, replaced the receiver-dryer,vacuumed the system down and charged it up with new oil and 134a. It works well. Good luck with yours.

Thanks for the info Mike. What was your cost on doing the replacement yourself?

Hmmmmm, let me see now.....seems to me the whole shootin match was less than 300 bucks. It was a couple of years ago. The big thing is the compressor. You can pick up a compressor at the junk yard for a 94 and it bolts right up. The last change-over I did was on my 89 e-350 van. All I did with it was get rid of the last of the R12 and use a change-over kit that I bought at Walmart. The kit comes with everything you need for a conversion on a system which is in OK shape. It seems that not everything we heard about compatability of products was entirely true. The estor oil apparently IS compatable with whatever mineral oil residue that you will have in the system. Didn't do anything but change the refrigerant. This system is working well also, without changing any of the components. Cost? about 30 bucks at wallyworld. The kit is available at auto parts stores like AutoZone also. best of luck.....mike

The reason that your ac isn't working is because there is a leak in the system. I would highly recommend that you change all of the seals on the couplings, check the compressor around the centre of it for leaks as well. I had replaced the o-ring that seals the 2 compressor halves (which you can't get from Ford, go to a store that supplies large o-rings) and then refill the system with the ester oil and new R134a. You don't have to change the compressor to a new one. That is a waste of money. I am sure that there is not much difference between compressors for the different freons. I converted my 92 4 years ago and have nice ice cold air since the conversion and all i did was replace every seal.

Yup! If your system is leaking, change the seals. Its kind of a pain but well worth the effort. On the compressor.... I only changed mine because it was shot. If yours is good just use it. It doesn't care what kind of refrigerant you use:-)
