I want to start off by saying thankyou in advance to anyone who can help me out. I have a 1989 250 4x4 with a 460, and a C-6 turrning 35 in tires. It only has 71500 original miles on it. It has a K&N intake, msd coil, flowmaster and a gutted cat. It takes a few cranks to start up,( my buddies 460 same year starts instantly) also going up hill it pings? also it seems to be down a little on power, and every once in a while on the freeway it will get a burst of energy for a split second. I have replaced all the sensors, the fuel filter and the fuel pump on the rail. My timing is right at 10btdc. It has new plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Could it be a fuel pressure prob? Any help would be appreciated.
i thought it would be a timing problem. To much timing causes hard starts. 10 btdc isn't a problem but you might want to check total timing. Was the timing set with the spout disconnected? if so I would roll it down to the shop before you have a burned exhaust valve or a hole in a piston. I have burned up a valve from to much total timing on my 1979.
I'll take a stab at it. I have an '89 F250 S-Cab, 460, C-6, 35's, 70,000 miles. Awhile back it started running poorly and had an exhaust leak on the header. I took it too a muffler shop and had had the leak fixed and a new 3" catback installed. At the time they said my cat was fine. 500 miles later it wouldn't get out of it's own way. I took it back (exhaust leak again) and the owner of the muffler shop tested the cat and said it was plugged. I decided to gut the cat rather than pony up $700.00 for a new one. It helped for a few miles than started running bad again. So....I bit the bullet put the new cat in and it runs better than ever. Turns out the O2 sensor is right in front of the cat where the 2-into-1 collector is. With the cat gutted, the sensor wasn't reading the right exhaust temp. (or so says my mechanic buddy). It spins tires now.
Another note: Before I put 4.11's in it, with the 35's on, I was running 300 -400 rpm's lower at highway speed. I used to get pinging on hill climbs, too. I didn't have enough power to pull a steep hill without flooring it. After the new gear set, it runs uphill!!!
Thanks for the help. My timing was set with the plug out. I also had the problum of blowing exhast gaskets every other day until I gutted my cat. The pinging and hard starts however have been doning it since befor the cat was gutted and the exhast leaked. If I pull the vacume line on the fuel regulator it simulated how it cranks sometimes for a minute before it fires up.
