My 1994 F250 has the fuel injected 460 with EEC IV computer. Why would my engine start to ping recently? It pings from about 1200-2500 rpm. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.
Couple things you can do it. Gas companies change gas formulations with the seasons it seems. Some fomrulations will make your engine ping. Change gas stations and see if it goes away.
OR - maybe your timing is off. Fords seem to be bad for stretching their timng chains badly, throwing the timing off.
Maaaaaaybe your fuel system is slightly too lean......
As vehcles accumulate miles they tend to increase combustion chamber deposits. This may lead to increased pining. One fix is to just use higher octane gas.
Or try a bottle of Techron Concentrate. It's what mechanics and dealerships often use. One ounce per gallon of tank capacity. It's good stuff. It should reduce some of your combustion chamber deposits. It's only $10 or so a bottle.
Another thing that could be causing it is a plugged EGR valve or plugges EGR passages.
I have also heard that if your EGR valve sticks shut it can cause pinging. This sounds like something worth looking into since your pinging was a sudden development as might occur if your EGR valve went bad.
