I have a 2003 ranger with only 13,000 miles. I have talked to other people and they seem to have the same problem. Is anyone having trouble with the wear on their tires (ex. cupping on the front tires and uneven wear on the rear )
You need to rotate the tires every oil change, or 5k at the latest. I bought tires from les schwab so the rotate them for free. You might also want to have someone check your alignment, preferably go to a shop that checks it for free, and doesn't charge anything if it's not out of alignment. Any noises coming from the front end?
Just thought of something else. Are these the stock goodyear wrangler tires on the truck? If so, they ARE the problem. They're junk, wear bad, etc. Do a search and you'll find some pictures of the same tire that are worn really bad, cupped, etc. Do yourself a favor and buy some real tires, and rotate them every oil change. Tires with an aggressive tread will cup the front ones. I have Coopers on my 01. I finally rotated them after 20,000 miles. There was just a slight difference on the corners from turning.
The bottom line is, any tire you don't rotate and ballance every 5k miles will not wear properly, and it will not last as long. It's worse for off road or all terrain type tires, or maybe it just more noticable with those types of tires, but without doing the recomended maintinance that's what happens -
If you are running Goodyear RT/S's (stock on 4x4 XLT and Edges) this is typical. I have read many threads in other forums of people having similar issues with these tires. They are not necessarily good tires, Goodyear was simply the lowest bidder that met Ford's minimum specs for an OEM tire. If they are RT/S's, religious rotation and maintaining tire pressures will maximize tire life. I dumped the RT/S's within 3 months of buying my 03. IMO they are junk, especially because I take my truck off-road.
I have a 2004 Ranger Edge 4x4 with the Goodyear RT/S's on them and saw wear on the front around 5000 miles and took it to Les Schwab and they rotated them for free for me.....its in good alignment and no problems...just the way the truck wears on the tires. Keep'em rotated and you should be fine on the tires. I agree....rotate at the latest every 5k miles.
goodyear AT/S are great tires i have then on my work truck (CHEBY) and just put a set on my ranger. Rotation is a need i had sport kings and they wore like crap and traction was crap and would not stay ballanced
I dumped my OEM Goodyear RT/Ss with 6,000 miles on my truck. They ARE junk...esp. off road. I can't believe Ford markets them as "rugged all-terrain tires" in their Ranger literature...what a joke. I am running MTs now, but will probably go back with ATs next to reduce weight and increase fuel mileage.
