I have an '04 Lariat SCab 5.4 and looking at new exhaust. Just LOVE the Flowmaster tone and am looking at putting a SI/DO rear exit system.
Now I used to have a Flowmaster 40 in my 91 4Runner V6 and it did sound great...but I do understand people's comments on drone inside the cab, especially around town at low throttle.
In an exhaust I am looking for a great tone with some to moderate sound level increase, and any MPG or performance gains will be pure gravy.
So my question is for those that either don't like the 40 series drone OR actually had a 40 series Flowmaster removed....have you ever tried the 50 series? If so how did you like it? Would you say it is a reasonable or substantial muting from the 40 to 50 series?
I have a friend with the 50 series, and compared to my 40 series it is considerably quieter. My 2004 F-150 hardly drones on the freeway b/c of all of the sound insulation.
i have a SI/DO flowmaster installed on my '04 fx4 and i'm really happy with it. i also didn't want something that would annoy my neighbors, and i haven't had any problems so far. i barely hear it on the freeway, thanks to the great cabin insulation. however, it does sound loud enough when i want it to sound loud. hope this helps.
Go with the 40! I only hear a mild drone when cruising at highway speeds and it sounds great when you get on the gas. Neighbors will not complain about the 40's. Very quiet when driving through the neighborhood.
thanks a lot for the replies guys!!! Like I said I've had to 40 series and really did like it (also had 40 series duals on an '82 F350) but that was years ago. I guess my tastes have changed so I'm gonna give the 50 a shot.
Probably go 3" from the y-pipe to the muff and then dual out 2.5" exiting the rear. I'll let you know what I think!!
no doubt I will report back. But may be a few weeks before I get it done. I am currently in the process of buy my muffler guy a new swimming pool...I mean getting the sound sorted out on my other car.
