To those out there with Flowmaster mufflers, do you have any drone inside the cab with those mufflers. I am interested in either 70 series part #530702 or 50 series part #530502. Both of these mufflers are single 3" in and dual 2.5 out. I purchased the Gibson dual extreme stainless steel exhaust system for my '08 V10, the tailpipes are excellent quality and fit perfectly. However my experience with Gibson mufflers means drone, drone and more drone. For now the Gibson muffler is on there, but I need to find something that doesn't buzz the eardrums. Thanks.
I have noticed that 3v V10 motors have more drone than 2v V10 with any aftermarket muffler. I wonder if the Dynomax VT muffler would be worth a shot on the 3v V10. I have heard good results with less drone from the mustang crowd. Dynomax Performance Exhaust | Mufflers | Dynomax VT Muffler

I'd say definitely worth a shot if NOT towing. I'd expect the flapper valve to be held open with the volume of exhaust gasses flowing when pulling hard, eliminating the effect. Or maybe a couple in parallel?
I believe droning is largely due to resonance.
I considered experimenting with short "glasspack" type bullet mufflers after the main muffler (behind the axle) to absorb resonant noise, but fortunately did not have to!
Playing with tailpipe length, direction, and distance and/or angles from sound reflecting surfaces (trailer, truck bed, road surface) can also change resonances.
I had a '65 Ford Fairlane with a built 302 that had a horrible drone on freeway. I was in college and broke... Out of desperation, I extended the tailpipes about 2" and the problem went away. It was still a bit loud (headers and 2.5" exhaust with turbo mufflers) and still tore motor mounts to shreds (until I added a chain to limit engine twisting), but I could hear the stereo and have a conversation!
MWSF250, I believe Johnny Langton also had the idea of putting an additional muffler on there as well. While I was on the Dynomax website, I looked under the FAQ section and someone asked a question about using their Bullet Race Muffler as a resonator and Dynomax said that it could be used that way. So I think I will try that. I will put that little muffler before the Gibson muffler. Gibson only offers the Extreme Dual Exhaust system for the short beds, so because I have a long bed I had to add a 16 inch piece to the front of the muffler, I will take that piece off and replace it with the Bullet muffler and it should fit. I will let you know how it sounds.
Try to rearrange things so the bullet is after the FM. I suspect some of the resonant notes are being produced by the chambers of the FM, so having the bullet after it may be more effective....
Note: I do not know that for sure, just my suspicion. Resonances are tricky.
I very highly doubt that, especially with such a small capacity muffler like the CB extreme.
The BB and BB2 have enough capacity to help really cut the drone down. Putting a resonator after your current muffler would be a good option.
The Dynomax VT is an interesting design however the case size on the VT is smaller than I would like for SD.
I have the cherry bomb extreme muffler on my v10 and it sounds great, minimal drone that you cant hear with the windows up.It is a small capacity muffler, but it is a lot more quiet than the flowmaster 40 series, unless you bring it above 3000 rpm. then it sounds plain mean.
check out some the vids on you tube with ford v10's and the cherry bomb extreme. I think you should all see them if you want a cool sound that is not flowmaster.
The mufflers that most of us are refering too (FM70 BB2 and FM50BB) have over twice the capacity of the FM40 and CB Extreme mufflers. Plus both of those larger mufflers have anti drone chambers. If the OP is getting drone with a larger sized packed muffler the FM40 or CB will be worse as far as drone goes, especially on a 3V.
The muffler I have is single in and dual out, so I would need two resonators. But sitting here thinking about that, the factory had a resonator after the muffler, in fact it was located right after the pipe went over the rear axle. Maybe Ford is on to something. I think I will order a Flowmaster 70 series and see how that sounds, this Gibson muffler has an awesome sound at idle but sounds like a straight six when you take off. Or I could paint my truck yellow and black then it would sound just right.
The FM50BB is the largest capacity chambered muffler flowmaster makes and is 2" wider than the FM70BB2 muffler, all the other dimensions are the same. The extra 2" width on the 50 just may interfere with the frame depending on how the tailpipes are configured. The 70 would give you a little more wiggle room.
I think Ford started putting the resonators on the tailpipe on the 08'up gassers. Ford sets the trucks up to be very quiet from the factory as do a lot of other OEs.
The Gibson system is designed for a round muffler, so I found a 70 series muffler part #530702 that is oval and the outlets are close enough together that it should work with the tailpipes. I just wished the Flowmaster was available in stainless steel.
DKF, you are right, the resonator was first available in the '08's. My truck is a '08.
