Hey all, i test drove a '91 explorer today and absolutely loved it, i put it in 4 wheel drive to test it, and it worked fine, but when i was driving it back to the dealer, when slowing down or speeding up it had a grinding noise like beefy tires rubbing the fenders, i like it but can anyone tell me what this is, any help would be appriciated thanks, you guys are all great
Did you take it back out of 4x4 before driving back to the dealer? Did you put it in 4x4 on the pavement and attempt to turn? If yes to either of these questions, you may have caused some damage to the drivetrain. The '91 is not designed to be driven on pavement in 4x4. Doing so is a good way to cause some costly repairs.
ya i took it out of 4 wheel drive before i left the gravel, and it was fresh gravel that was a pretty forgiving surface, it had no trouble driving or anything, and it was out of 4 wheel drive, i don't know if it was there before i didn't pay attention, i am 16, and my grandpa was messing with the radio and stuff to see if it all worked, i was more worried about the motor and drivetrain than he was, but i am lost at what it could be thanx for the reply and your help!!
When you disengaged the 4x4, did you also disengage the hubs? If they are auto hubs you need to back up a few feet to get them to release. If you didn't disengage the hubs, maybe the noise comes from something in the front drivetrain (u-joints or something).
After doing a brake job on my 92, I had a problem with the auto-locking hubs. I didn't get them lined up exactly right so whenever I made a right turn, it would grind and whizz. The little fingers inside the hub were catching on the splined shaft and were turning like it was in 4 wheel drive. I also had to clean out the hub because it full of grease and grime and the bearing was not turning smoothly. After that, everything was great. If your 4 wheel has not been engaged in some time, I bet the hubs might not be releasing fully....
