hey, i would like to know what are the biggest tires i could fit on stock wheels of a 91 explorer, i would like to put big tires on it, and i don't care if the rub a little on turns , it has some pretty lame tires, and i want to go bigger, but i would like to play on the ice if i buy it, any other time i will be on the road, i have posted many times and u guys are the greatest, thanx all.
ok thanx, do you think i would dare go with 31X11.50 and i am gonna buy this explorer, and it has to last me at least 2 years of driving everyday, and what are some good tires you guys would suggest for long cold iowa winters, and long hot iowa summers?? i am kinda at a limited budget right now, but soon i am hoping to get a job so i can have a few mods on the explorer, i have also heard of you guys saying that the 91 trannys are kind of weak, i am gonna drive it everyday, plus sometimes pull a boat, please let me know any suggestions to these problems
my girlfriend has a 91 explorer that we put 3 inch of body under it so we could throw a set of 31x10.5 pro comp mt's under it. I dont see how they could fit stock, especially without rub. also after putting the tires on the tranny started having problems so if you want to tow a boat on the stock engine and tranny I would probably re-gear it depending on the size of the boat. -Kell-
well does anybody know of a stock sized tire that will fit that is fairly aggresive, but not to aggrasive so that they don't wear as fast, i want this thing to last me, it is just like a 22 foot bass tracker that i will be pulling so if this can't be done i can use my dads truck, but i really like that explorer
Im not completely sure but i think that 30x9.5's will fit under your explorer. in that size you can get good bfg mt's, super swampers or goodyear mtr's. all are good tires and you can go to www.4wheelparts.com to check on prices. if you want to fit 31's a 3 inch body is under $100 and makes it look pretty sweet, its also simple to put on. take out ten bolts jack up each side put pacers in and put in the new bolts. the bumpers are the problem.-kell-
If you're gonna put big rubber on AND pull a a boat, I would definitely invest in a good aftermarket tranny cooler. The Explorer trannys are very weak and the added stress you would give with big tires and a boat would probably cause it to crap out on the ramp coming out of the water. I have seen it happen...

Definatly second that, they are relatively easy to install too. As far as tires, my old Dueller A/Ts worked great in the Iowa snow and heat and they make them in a 31x10.5R15 too! You should be safe running 31s on your stock rims and with a 3" Body lift, you could run 32s.
hey guys thanx, when i went to that 4X4 parts store the lift was 93 and the tires were, like 170, is that the price for one or is that the price for all four, it sounds like the price for one, but if it like the price for 2 or 4 that is a good deal, can anyone recommend what a good tranny cooler is?? i have the choice between this explorer and a chevy blazer, i REALLY like the explorer but i need to convince my grandpa that the explorer will handle what i need, since he is buying it!please let me know what you all think ASAP so i can talk to my grandpa
I would imagine that $170 is the price each so you can do the math times 4. Also, I doubt those tires will fit on the stock rims so you may need to figure in the price of some aftermarket rims also. A good tranny cooler can be found at summitracing.com. Anything made by B&M will give you great performance at a good price. Autozone stocks some off-brand coolers that look like they would work fine, but I like the B&M name. Just make sure you figure out how much the max weight is you will be towing and make an adjustment for the tires so you can get a cooler with sufficient capacity. And don't exceed the max weight rating spec'd by the manufacturer. Sometimes adding big tires and a lift will decrease the amount a vehicle can handle. Can get you into a very dangerous situation if you're not careful...
