16 should read" Cut off all but 1" from the vent line.

By the way, there is a photo of the piece I cut off in my gallery.

That photo os pretty small. The idea is to remove the fuel gage/pickup panel and stick your arm in there with a pair of pvc pipe cutters and snip the air vent tube and filler tube that hangs down into the tank. You want to cut them both off as close to the top of the tank as possible.

When you do this, you can set a truckstop #2 Diesel pump on wide open automatic and it won't click off until it is full.

I've always just done the vent tube and not the filler tube and haven't had any problems, should I be worried about not cutting the other off I've never heard of it until now?

Whatever works for you. I just thought the 4" or so the tube sticks down in the tank would limit the amount of fuel you would get in the tank in a hurry.

harpoon mod

One other trick is to heat the ring in hot water before you install the sending unit. Some are very hard to get started and thread on. It will cost you 14.00 at Ford if you break it and 1 day to get. Also I've used a soldering iron to cut the tube off closer to the top of the tank and no mess to clean up.
Good Luck

I too only cut the vent tube (due to not fully understanding or recalling the directions when I did same); however no problems filling. I always fill to the brim; prior to harpoon, I would add an additional 5.5 gallons. After the harpoon, I can only add 0.5 to 0.8 gallons (a half gallon if initial filling at a slower rate and usually about 0.8 gallons if the initial fill is with the pump at max).

As has been recommended I used the ratcheting PVC pipe cutter (found with underground sprinkler supplies at big hardware stores); the razor sharp blade makes a clean cut in a couple of squeezes and the only mess is the piece you just cut off.

Ok, if it is a good thing to cut these tubes flush, why are they built the way that they are??

When posting a reply that is directly above …
THERE IS NO NEED TO USE THE QUOTE FUCTION..
Thanks

The popular theory is that there is no difference between a tank for gasoline or diesel use; the tank used for gasoline has to have an air space at the top for the evaporative emissions to work. There is no evaporative emissions on the diesel fuel tank.

Considering that the tube that the fuel is entering the tank is sticking down into the tank a few inches and likewise for the vent tube.... as long as the fuel is below these two tubes the air being replaced with fuel, as the tank fills can be displaced out the vent tube; however, as soon as the fuel rises enough to block both of these two tubes the air can no longer easily escape nor the fuel enter - so the pump clicks off.

Mine would click off every gallon or two and took forever to fill. Now it fills completely and clicks off in just a couple of minutes using the big truck nozzles.

The tank will now hold an extra 4 gallons that I couldn't get in it without a 10 minute battle.

I did mine last summer here in Texas. I guess the scorching air temperature was sufficient to heat the ring. I don't even remember it being a problem.

harpoon

Yes this is the line you cut. Mine was yellow about 1" dia. While you have the tank out you should do the pre-pump mod also. The quick connect line is known to suck air and the return line on the sending unit should be rerouted.

They have a good kit and instructions .

http://www.dieselmanor.com/fuel/tank_kit.asp

You may have to copy and paste link .When I click on it it goes to motorhaven for some strange reason

the boys at motorhaven are understandably stingy with the links to retailers. but that kit is a good idea. ill be pulling the unit outta my tank tomorrow and ill be doing some of those little mods
