Thanks for the feedback. I was starting to get concerned as I can't even really put the pedal to the floor while towing on flat ground without hitting 1250 degrees really quickly. I have talked to Dale about acquiring a Tymar intake. I hope it helps me. I will have to add the exhaust next.

I just put in my guages not to long ago with no mods at all, pulling a 5th wheel up a hill my temps got into the 1300's pre turbo and that is all stock. What do people do that don't have these guages running stock and hold the pedal to the mat going up a hill holding these temps and not knowing about it?

I'm dying to find out the answer to that one. There is a small part of me that doesn't want guages because I might not like what I see, but I know I need to see it anyway.

I was one of those 18 months ago. I pulled my 5th down from NH and would have sworn (In fact I believed) that I had flattened my turbo blades due to heat. Uphill, pedal down, 55-60 in 3rd. I wondered just how hot it had gotten. It turned out the loss of power was a EBPS gone bad.

EBPS = exhaust back pressure sensor. It will defuel the engine if the pressure gets too high. If it goes bad it can really foul things up.

Could operation at high altitude, say 9 to 12 thousand feet, cause high exhaust temperatures? I see temps of 1150 post turbo pretty frequently with a '96 stock except for downpipe, empty cat, and Tymar. Don't want to start a discussion about temp probe location. It seems like I'm running hotter than I should for a basicly stock engine and wonder if it could be the lack of air up here.

Are all you folks running 1100 degrees using the pre-intercooler models?

Yea, mines a '96 - no intercooler. Thing I don't understand is why a basicly stock engine is producing this kind of exhaust heat. And this is post turbo. I am going to change probe location to pre turbo as soon as I can get around to it, maybe there isn't that big of a temperature difference between pre & post on extended climbs with a load. Before I put the the pyro in I'd just zip right up the hill. Now I downshift, get out of the throttle, lose 25 mph and cool down.

Is there a way to check this sensor? Is it ovbious if this sensor is bad? What kind of symptoms would a person see if it was bad? This is just for my own education by the way...

I was running without gauges when i bought my truck. I didnt "really" know that it was chipped when i bought it b/c it was my first diesel. I pulled a 6k# trailer from VA to CA and back, stock everything and no gauges. Im sure it was running a bit too hot. I dont know what hp the chip was (im running diablo programer now).
I was just running about 65 mph all the way cross country in cruise control. Had to downshift very few times (I80 most of way). Im sure i was too hot. Oh well. Nothing i can do now, all seems great now
