Question Where should Pyro go??

Ok Guru's, I need some direction...! I've heard different stories as to where the pyro should be installed...Before the turbo or on the down pipe??

I figured you found this, but pre-turbo is preferred, but if your DP has a bung to put a probe in, it's a lot easier to do it that way.

Left as in driver's side or passenger's side? Just a thought that occured to me. Does it matter which side it's put into, as far as readings go? Sure wish we had a central location to place them so you could get a reading from both banks of cylinders.

I've got a nifty Pyro that I scavenged from my snowmobile. It has one sweep, but it's selectable between two thermocouples. It also has two amber lights that indicate which "bank" you're reading and a red light in the center that flashes to indicate when you've achieved a pre-set temperature. It also records highest temps per probe. I have a thermocouple in each manifold. The only drawback is with that Pyro in my face that I'm used to seeing on my snowmobile that says "SLP" Starting Line Products, I sometimes forget that I'm in my truck and start driving it like my sled........... "See if you can wood it and get the hi-mark on this hill!"

yes it goes in the drivers side. it is easier to get to. just dril and tap it where the manifold meets the up pipe. you can drill straight up so most of the shavings fall down and out of the pipe.

Yeah. Is that picture reversed? It looks like the up pipe is going to the left in that picture, which is why I thought it might be the passenger side.

no actually i was under the truck and i wasnt right under it with the camera because it couldnt get far away enough for it to be good. the camera was right below the center of the transmission almost, that is why it looks like it's going to the left.

I was wondering this too. How can you get an accurate reading of temps if you only read from one side?

Technically, you can't. If you're only reading from one side, and something goes wrong on the other side, you won't know it. The best bet for our trucks, if you really wanted to do it, is one pyro on each bank of cylinders. May be a little extreme, but I've heard of at least one Cummins guy that had one probe for each cylinder. That's extreme.

For what most of us do, one pyro is fine, and if you want to be on the conservative side, stick it in the downpipe, plus it just rolls out the exhuast when it either melts off, of th stinger comes undone instead of running through everything else. Just my .02

Have you hever heard of this happening, under normal conditions? If these guages are designed to read up to 1600* then the probe shouldn't be melting before then. I'm also don't see how it could come undone and fall in to go through everything else, as the threads in the manifotld are tapered (NPT) and the probe is still going to be attached with wires. Maybe it's happened, but it just seems highly unlikely to me.

I haven't seen it happen on a PSD.... yet....But I've replaced several turbos on OTR tractors that had eaten a broken thermocouple. It does a number on the turbine blades.
